McGinty Bros.' Free Hawthorn Woods, IL Plant Health Evaluation: Protection Against Your Plants' Enemies
Your trees and shrubs are under attack. Enemies lurk inside a tree trunk, in the ground, on the wind, and in the rainwater collecting around your yard. If the insects don't get them, the diseases will. Stealthily, these enemies attack undercover, in small amounts. At first, you don't see them or what they are doing to your trees, shrubs or lawn. But then, the attack multiplies. The devastation that was once well-hidden becomes apparent. Your plants look unhealthy or your lawn starts turning yellow. Is this the right time to call on a plant doctor? The truth is, by the time the disease and insect damage has become noticeable, it may already be too late to save the tree or shrub. The best time to fight the enemy is when they first attack, or even before they attack. That is why McGinty Bros., Inc. offers a free plant health evaluation.
Be Proactive To Keep Your Trees, Shrubs and Lawn Healthy
Taking care of trees seems like one of the easiest landscaping maintenance tasks, especially if they are already mature. Trim some branches now and then, and that's about it, right? Nope. Trees and shrubs are susceptible to damage from diseases, insects, fungi, and other types of stress on the plants. They need regular checkups, just like people do. McGinty Bros.' certified Arborists are like tree doctors. They diagnose problems that most people don't see or understand. They know how to treat a sick tree or shrub, and they know when there is hope to repair the damage, or when the damage is so bad that the tree needs to be removed.
We want to help you take care of your trees and shrubs. To make this as easy as possible, we come over to your property and evaluate the health of your plants for free. What's the catch? Hopefully, we catch a small problem before it becomes a big problem. Otherwise, there is no catch. You get a free report on the health of your trees and shrubs. Our certified Arborists create an integrated pest and disease management plan specifically for your property. You decide if you want to follow the McGinty Bros. plan.

Prevent Disease Before It Strikes
Disease activity most commonly strikes during the months of March through June. However, disease activity is not easy to spot until the damage is already beyond control. For this reason, we highly recommend taking preventative measures. To find out if your plants are at risk for certain diseases, contact one of our certified Arborists for a diagnosis and plan.
Common disease problems in our area include:
- Blights
- Foliar Fungi
- Rusts
- Scabs
- Mildew
- Leaf Spotting
- Dutch Elm Disease (we use a DutchTrig® injection to prevent this disease)
Declare War on Problem Insects
The number one strategy during the war on problem insects: timing. Insects are only active during certain times of the growing season (March through November). We can only control insects when they are susceptible to our methods. Our certified Arborists (also known as Generals in the war on problem insects) understand the correct timing for applications of insect control. When they evaluate your trees and shrubs, they will make a battle plan to best protect your plants. Some of the insects they check for include:
- Emerald Ash Borer (and other borers)
- Moths and Caterpillars
- Scales
- Beetles
- Mites
- Weevils
- Leaf Miners
- Leafhoppers
- Lace Bugs
- Plant Bugs
- Ants
- Bees, Wasps, and Hornets
- Sap Suckers
- Box Elder Bugs
Taking care of insects on trees extends beyond the actual trees. We also provide applications to control insects around your home's foundation.
Tree Care Application Programs for Every Need
We've already discussed two major enemies that can attack your plants and undermine their health: disease and insects. However, there are more subtle enemies causing stress to your trees and shrubs. Did you know that these problems can be cared for?
- drought
- construction around the plants' area
- soil compaction
- grade changes
- root damage
Part of the care program involves a Deep Root Fertilization. This application is a 12-month slow release fertilization. We typically apply it between April and November. This is an easy and popular way to improve the root health of your trees and shrubs. When the roots are healthy, the top of the plant reaps the good rewards. A healthy tree has healthy roots!
Here's another popular variety of tree care application: Dormant/Horticultural Oil Applications. These are applied in the early spring and late fall. They smother overwintering insects and their egg masses.
We also use an Herbicide Application to control invasive woody species.
